Reducing your family’s screen time can be challenging. Any time you want to make a change you need to
break it down into a few simple steps.
1. Identify why you want to reduce your family’s screen time
2. What the change will look like?
3. How you will change it?
4. Measure if your changes are working
5. If working continue/if not working go back and try a different change – repeat until you succeed
Step 1 - you should be clear on the negative impacts of screen time are well known – health risk from obesity to diabetes, less sleep, antisocial behaviors etc.
Step 2 – Does the change look like eliminating all screen time usage or is it reduced to fall in line with well-respected expert guidelines such as no screens for under two year old members of the family and only an hour a day for those aged 2-5 with and only 1 to 2 hours for those over 5?
Step 3 – Make the change, this would usually be a series of smaller steps such as establishing rules, explaining the rules to the family, negotiating rules, implementing useful tools such as Pixel Pounds, setting up parental controls on gadgets.
Step 4 – Measure if the changes you have made are having the impact you wanted. Are screens only used at times and for the amount of time you have set? Are rules adhered to?
Step 5 – Based on the measures you set are you happy? If you are happy continue doing what you are doing, if not revisit step 3 and try again.
Do not give up everything worth doing takes time. With the right motivation, tools and belief in yourself you can achieve the healthy changes you wanted in your house.
