Screen time can be reduced in several ways in this post I will cover the tools available to you that you may not be aware of. Built into most modern operating systems especially Apple iOS and Google Android are parental controls. Using these parental controls you can manage what your child has access to on their device.
Go into the Settings > General > Restrictions
Then you need to set a restrictions passcode, (remember it otherwise you may need to delete all of the devices settings to reset the device)
You can then set which apps you want to grant access to by toggling apps off and on.
The official apple support page can be found here: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201304
You will need to add a new user:
Tap Apps>Settings>Users>Add Users
Accept the notice
Tap Set up now
Follow the setup wizard
You can switch users by swiping down and tap the user you want to switch to
The main account is called owner and should be protected with a lock screen to prevent your child changing the permissions
Once you have a second user set up you can set permissions on the app store – you can:
Filter content available
Enter the new account you set up
Tap Apps>Playstore>Menu>Settings>Parental controls
Tap the switch to turn on parental controls
Set a pin
Tap content type and set an age rating
You can prevent purchases
Tap menu (hamburger menu button) then tap settings
Select Require Authentication for purchases
Tap “all purchases”
There are third party apps on both Google Play Store and the Apple App Store which can give you even greater control of your child’s device. These apps can stop the phone being used, deny access to sites, and filter content on the device and much more. When using one of these apps consider privacy implications for your child and your relationship with them if you are using them to see what they are looking at and who they are communicating with.
Setting up the devices your family uses with the inbuilt controls is a great way to manage screen and gadget usage. Using the inbuilt tools in conjunction with offline tools and incentives such as Pixel Pounds is a great way to have a happy family.
