Motivation is an interesting thing, it can come from many places but when it comes to our children many of us have trouble motivating them.
To understand how we can motivate them we should reflect on what is motivation – it is a force that wills you to do something. Children and no different to us adults; different things will motivate you to carry out different actions, finding the thing that motivates is key to getting the action.
We could call this motivating force a currency, find your child’s currency and you will have the ability to motivate. Their currency may an activity that they enjoy doing, something that they want or spending time with a favourite person. By creating incentives based around their currency you are able to motivate towards the goal, behaviour or action you want from your child.
When I was growing up my favourite dessert was apple strudel, I would beg my mother for it but it was only made on special occasions due to how much work it was for her to make. As a child I was also not all that interested in doing my homework. My mother put two and two together and used my desire for apple strudel to work. For every week that I had done all my homework and received good grades she would make me a strudel. She had found my currency and used it to motivate me towards desired behaviour.
In the modern world time in front of screens is the currency of choice for many children, they could spend hours in front of a screen chatting, playing games, and watching videos. But too much time in front of a screen is often at the detriment of healthier and more socially rich activities. By understanding their currency I am sure you can use it to motivate your child towards healthy behaviours and achieving their goals.
