Putting a screen away screen is hard. Screens are with us all the time now and they are used for everything now a days. Anything we previously would have had to set aside a time to do is not at our fingertips. We are literally an impulse away from having doing what previously may have been an outing or an afternoon in itself.
Want to shop - open up the department store in your pocket
Want to read a newspaper - open up the world of news in your pocket
Want to play a game - open up the video arcade in your pocket
Want to catch up with friends - open up the phone/photo album in your pocket
Want to find the answer to a question that you can't get off your mind - open the encyclopedia in your pocket
No wonder it is now so hard to put our screens away, any impulse we have no longer needs to wait, the temptation to address what ever impulse you had can be satisfied straight away. Overcoming the desire to satisfy our impulses can be hard, but it is possible. The desire to satisfy the need for information or to distract our self is like an itch it needs to be scratched but it can be overcome. Acknowledge that you want to look at your phone tell your self that you can look in five minutes if you still feel the need. More often than not it turns out the desire has faded and you really had not need to look.
Children are not all that different than we are the difference is that they are still developing and have not yet fully developed their impulse control. As they grow and develop they need to learn to be in control of their mind, how to direct their focus and attention. Being able to focus on a task at hand for extended periods of time is essential. When a child can focus they can reach their goals, with screens around them the ability to focus is lost and the potential for distraction much higher.
You can help your child to practice their ability to focus by removing distractions. Work with them to understand the importance of controlling their thoughts, dealing with impulses and overcoming them. Go on the journey with them when it comes to reducing screen time, you may find that you benefit as much as they do.
To make managing screen time easier for you and your child implement a reward system so that you can easily manage screen time keeping it to healthy levels that won't let it turn into a bigger constant distraction. Pixel Pounds is your helper and reward system.
